New Baden is named after the historical territory of Baden, Germany. It was founded in 1855, remaining a small village until struck by a devastating tornado in 1896. As of the census of 2010, there were 3,349 people and 1,247 households. There were 1,333 housing units within the city limits. The racial makeup according to the 2010 census of the village was 92.1% White, 2.7% African American, 0.5% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.20% Pacific Islander, 1.0% from other races, and 2.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.4% of the population.

There were 1,247 households out of which 36.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.8% were married couples living together, 10.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.0% were non-families. 24.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
