According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.4 square miles (11.4 km2), of which 4.3 square miles (11.2 km2) is land and 0.077 square miles (0.2 km2), or 1.58%, is water.
As of the census of 2000, there were 11,157 people, 4,982 households, and 2,909 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,657.1 people per square mile (1,025.7/km²). There were 5,177 housing units at an average density of 1,232.9/sq mi (475.9/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 86.16% White, 8.75% African American, 0.61% Native American, 1.43% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 1.22% from other races, and 1.76% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.45% of the population.
There were 4,982 households out of which 24.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.1% were married couples living together, 12.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 41.6% were non-families. 33.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.19 and the average family size was 2.80.
