Hawthorn is located in southeastern Clarion County at 41°1?14?N 79°16?27?W? / ?41.02056°N 79.27417°W? / 41.02056; -79.27417 (41.020621, -79.274163), on the north side of Redbank Creek, a west-flowing tributary of the Allegheny River. The creek forms the boundary with Armstrong County to the south.

According to the United States Census Bureau, Hawthorn has a total area of 1.08 square miles (2.81 km2), of which 1.02 square miles (2.65 km2) is land and 0.06 square miles (0.15 km2), or 5.50%, is water.
