State of Illinois Drug Testing News
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, in 2017, Illinois had approximately 2,202 drug overdose deaths that involved or were related to opioids. This puts them at a rate of 17.2 deaths per 100,00 persons which is higher than the national rate of 14.6 deaths per 100,000 persons during the same time period. Research revealed the greatest increase in opioid deaths was seen in cases involving synthetic opioids (mainly fentanyl): a rise from 127 deaths in 2014 to 1,187 deaths in 2017. Deaths involving heroin also increased significantly in the same 3-year period: from 844 to 1,251 deaths. There were 623 deaths involving prescription opioids in 2017, nearly double the 343 deaths in 2014.
Research also revealed that Illinois providers in Illinois wrote approximately 51.1 opioid prescriptions for every 100 persons in 2017. This was actually below the national average rate of 58,7 prescriptions during the same year. This is the lowest rate in the state since data became available in 2006 (CDC). The rate of overdose deaths involving opioid prescriptions has not followed this trend. From 2015 through 2017 alone, the rate increased more than 75 percent to 4.8 deaths per 100,000 persons.
Lastly, In 2016, the rate of NAS/NOWS in Illinois was about 2.7 NAS/NOWS cases per 1,000 hospital births, affecting 391 babies born in Illinois that year (Illinois Department of Public Health).
Marijuana in the State of Illinois
In the state of Illinois, recreational use of marijuana is technically illegal however, according to the Chicago Tribune, Democratic state lawmaker has filed a bill to legalize recreational marijuana in Illinois that likely goes further than other legislators prefer, but it has officially started the debate over complex legislation that will need to serve many interests. The bill, introduced Jan. 25 by Rep. Carol Ammons of Urbana, would allow licensed businesses to grow and sell pot, and residents to grow up to 24 plants at home. The measure is unlikely to pass because lawmakers are expected to act on a more restrictive proposal that's been in the works for more than a year. Among the more noteworthy provisions, Ammons' bill would allow for the creation of on-site consumption areas for customers to smoke or swallow the drug.
In the state of Illinois, medical marijuana is allowed and legal for qualifying patients. To qualify for a medical marijuana card you must be a resident of the State of Illinois, have a qualifying debilitating medical condition, have a signed physician certification, be at least 18 years of age, not hold a school bus permit of a Commercial Driver's License and not be an active duty law enforcement officer, correctional officer, correctional probation officer or firefighter.
