Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Mount Storm, West Virginia. Specializing in hair testing for drugs and alcohol, we have locations nationwide ready to assist. If needed, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or other parts of the body is often sufficient for testing. Customize your hair analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other requirements.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a prevalent method for assessing drug use. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals increasingly favor these over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle testing appeals to zero-tolerance workplaces, courts, and probation scenarios due to its extensive detection period—up to 90 days—and resistance to tampering, though urine tests remain superior for spotting drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as an effective means to identify drug and alcohol consumption. Within the fibers of a growing hair strand, hair captures biomarkers, offering a thorough historical record. When clipped close to the scalp, hair can show drug and alcohol usage for roughly up to three months. This type of sample is straightforward to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to send.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, with approximately 200 hair strands (equivalent to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields the optimal 100mg of hair for screening and verification. For tests involving EtG, additional parameters, or those with more than 10 panels, it's advisable to use a specimen weighing 150mg. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for measuring. If scalp hair is not present, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. "Head hair" signifies only scalp hair, whereas "Body hair" encompasses all other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The core stages in a laboratory drug test processing include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial incorporation of a sample into a laboratory's system. This process entails confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid inspection for drugs of abuse. Though Screening offers a budget-friendly method to eliminate drug presence in many samples, any positive screens must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples giving a presumptive positive result during Screening need a follow-up confirmation.

In cases where Screening indicates positive results, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which underscores the complexity of hair drug analysis.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technology is employed for Confirmation of any screening positives. If needed, samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation. The end-to-end lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO/IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use over a span of up to 90 days, versus urine tests, which have a more limited detection period.
  • Resistant to manipulation: Hair drug tests are hard to deceive, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Chronicles consumption: This testing method provides a timeline of drug use, unlike tests focusing on recent consumption alone.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect immediate usage: Drugs typically become detectable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier compared to other drug testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth rates can influence metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
