Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis services in Acorn, Virginia. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol analysis, we are experts with facilities nationwide ready to conduct tests. It's necessary to have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or, if needed, from your body. Hair samples can test for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored solutions.

In recent developments, drug analysis methods have progressively embraced hair follicle assessments. More employers, courts, and addiction professionals prefer hair tests over traditional urine samples. Companies with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probation officers favor hair detection. A chief advantage is its extended detection scope—up to 90 days—completed under supervision, making it very difficult to manipulate. Still, for the past 5 days of consumption, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective mechanism for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair can offer a comprehensive view over extended periods by embedding biomarkers in its strands during growth. When clipped near the scalp, it can reveal drug and alcohol usage for up to around three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, moderately resistant to tampering, and convenient to mail.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) from the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, optimal for analysis. For EtG, enhancements, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. It's suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent portion of body hair is suitable. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test outcome involves four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the preliminary processing of a sample within a lab's system. This process encompasses checking that the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary quick assessment for drug abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient method for eliminating drug use in the bulk of samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples that show a positive indication in Screening mandate a supplementary confirmation.

If a sample shows a positive indication in the Screening phase, more hair is obtained from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are withdrawn from hair at much lower concentrations than in other approaches (for instance, urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicating a positive result undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, ensuring more precise results.
  • Delivers historical information: It supplies a record of drug use over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It necessitates about 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically costs more than other methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests," the test evaluates the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Acorn, VA The hair follicle test surpasses traditional urine tests in several ways. With a broader detection span and heightened accuracy, it effectively reveals prolonged history of drug use. In comparison, urine tests present shorter detection periods and are prone to potential tampering.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
