Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Abanda, Alabama. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with facilities available in cities across the nation for hair testing services. Generally, hair on the crown measuring 1.5 to 2 inches is sufficient. Drug, alcohol/ETG, or custom hair testing solutions are available.

Hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a preferred method in recent years. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals often choose hair drug testing over traditional urine testing. With a longer detection period of up to 90 days, hair follicle tests support zero-tolerance policies and are resistant to manipulation. However, urine tests remain more accurate for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is perceived as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and other drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window for alcohol and other drugs of up to roughly 3 months. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of around 200 hair strands (about the dimension of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It's recommended to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar amount of body hair might be used. The term "head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" pertains to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process of a drug test result encompasses four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This process includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not available via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid evaluation for drug abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in court. Samples that show presumptive positivity in Screening need a secondary confirmation.

If a sample displays presumptive positivity during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted at a substantially lower concentration from hair than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is particularly challenging.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Tampering resistance: Cheating a hair drug test is exceptionally difficult, increasing the accuracy of results.
  • Historical use information: It provides insight into drug use trends over time, rather than only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
