Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Laramie, Wyoming. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol testing, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis, with facilities available Nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically, a person needs to have hair 1.5 to 2 inches long on their head or body. The hair can be examined for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific analytes.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent choice for drug detection. Many workplaces, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts prefer hair drug testing over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are employed by entities with zero-tolerance policies for drug misuse, including courts and probationers. A key advantage of this method is the extended detection window, up to 90 days, and it is collected under observation, making it virtually foolproof. For drug use within the past five days, urine analysis remains the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly seen as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. The strands encapsulate biomarkers within the fibers as they grow, providing a comprehensive historical account of substance use. When samples are clipped close to the scalp, they can offer a detection span of up to three months for both alcohol and drugs. Collection is straightforward, tampering is relatively complex, and the samples are easy to transport.

To obtain a suitable sample, a 1.5-inch segment comprising approximately 200 hair strands (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp is ideal, weighing about 100 mg, which is optimal for both initial screening and confirmation. For specific tests like EtG, additional panels, or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150 mg sample is advisable. A jeweler's scale is recommended for precise weight measurement. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair is permissible. In this context, 'head hair' specifically indicates scalp hair, whereas 'body hair' encompasses all other types of hair, such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Framework

The procedure for processing a drug test in the lab involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is first integrated into the lab's system. This phase checks if the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing entries not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes an initial evaluation for substances of abuse. It is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most instances, but any positive results need confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples showing a presumptive positive result during Screening require further confirmation.

If the Screening step results in a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower levels than other methods, such as urine or oral fluid tests, highlighting why hair drug analysis is more challenging.

Confirmation of any positive preliminary result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: It is challenging to deceive a hair drug test, thus enhancing result precision.
  • Offers background data: It allows observation of drug utilization over a duration, not just recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot detect immediate use: It requires around 5-7 days for drugs to be observable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses are generally costlier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: The test, commonly referred to as a "hair follicle test," actually analyzes the strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing the advantages of hair follicle testing against traditional urine tests in Laramie, WY, hair testing stands out for its greater detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, which offer a shorter detection window, hair testing provides a comprehensive analysis of drug use history.

Extended Detection Window

A distinct advantage of hair follicle drug testing is its extended detection window of up to 90 days. This feature gives employers in Laramie, WY a more comprehensive view of an individual's substance history.

With this prolonged time frame, hair testing provides insights into regular drug use patterns, allowing better-informed decisions based on the full picture of an individual's behavior.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
