The primary stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In cases where Screening indicates a positive, additional hair is obtained from the original sample for Extraction. At this stage, the concentration of drugs extracted from hair is lower compared to other methods like urine or saliva, which is why hair testing is the most challenging methodology.
Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All initial positive samples undergo cleansing before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab processing from Accessioning to Confirmation is controlled under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation alongside the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.
