Accredited Drug Testing provides full hair follicle drug screening services in Waterloo, Wisconsin. If a hair alcohol or drug test is required, we specialize in these and have facilities in all U.S. cities capable of conducting such tests. Usually, you must have between 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your scalp or body. Hair analysis can measure drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other purposes.

Recently, hair follicle testing has gained traction as the go-to method for drug testing. Many businesses, legal systems, and substance abuse experts now favor hair drug testing over the regular urine analysis. This testing is often utilized for zero-tolerance workplace policies, legal settings, and probation cases. Its longer detection window—up to 90 days—ensures accuracy, making it hard to manipulate. However, for detecting drugs used within the past 5 days, urine tests remain most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a potent means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of intoxicants by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the lengthening hair shaft. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal up to around a 3-month history of alcohol and drug usage. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in thickness) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for assessment and validation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests covering more than 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We advocate utilizing a jeweler's scale to measure the sample. If scalp hair is lacking, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. When speaking of head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four core steps in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary intake of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This encompasses confirming the proper sealing and transportation of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any supplementary data input not furnished by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening offers a cost-efficient method to discount drug use in most samples, any positive findings must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples that return presumptive positives in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

When a sample yields a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, extra hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are withdrawn from hair at substantially lower concentrations compared to methods like urine or oral fluid, highlighting why hair drug screening is the most laborious methodology to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening results is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives undergo washing prior to confirmation if required. The whole lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and in line with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage over a span of 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: Hair drug tests are difficult to manipulate, enhancing result reliability.
  • Supplies historical insight: It demonstrates a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It requires approximately 5-7 days before drugs manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual growth variations can alter drug metabolite concentration within hair.

Note: Although frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
