Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Viroqua, Wisconsin. If you require a hair-based drug or alcohol test, our experts specialize in hair testing, with facilities nationwide ready to conduct the tests. Standardly, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary. Analyses can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or multiple specialized tests.

Hair follicle drug tests have seen increased use in recent times. Employers, legal bodies, and substance abuse professionals increasingly opt for hair tests over common urine tests. Entities with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation often prefer these tests. The key advantage is a longer detection timeframe—up to 90 days—via an observed collection method, rendering the test tamper-proof, though standard urine tests remain more precise for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a long-term record of alcohol and other drugs by capturing biomarkers within the strands' fibers as they grow. When taken close to the scalp, hair gives approximately a 3-month period for identifying alcohol and other drugs. The collection process for hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the perfect amount for analysis and confirmation. To cover EtG, additional components, and/or panels beyond 10, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key four stages in the laboratory analysis of a drug test outcome encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. It features confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concluding any extra data input not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary rapid assessment for drug abuse. Though Screening offers a cost-efficient means to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for court validity. Samples that yield a presumptive positive in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

Upon receiving a presumptive positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is drawn from the original sample and processed for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a more challenging method.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS conducts the Confirmation for any positive screen results. All samples indicating presumptive positives are cleansed as necessary before confirmation. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug analyses can spot drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is notably tough to tamper with a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It sheds light on a pattern of drug intake over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Even though narratives often label them "hair follicle tests", the analysis involves the hair shaft, excluding the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
