Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Spring Green, Wisconsin. Should there be a need for hair-based drug or alcohol testing, Accredited Drug Testing is the expert, boasting centers across all major cities in the U.S., capable of facilitating such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be tested. Options include analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom hair testing solutions.

Over the recent years, the approach to drug testing has increasingly involved hair follicle tests. Employers, judiciary systems, and Substance Abuse specialists now prefer hair tests over the traditional urine tests. These are favored by entities with strict anti-drug policies, such as employers, courts, and probationers. The foremost advantage of hair follicle testing lies in its extended detection period—up to 90 days—conducted via a secure collection process, making it challenging to mask. Nonetheless, a urine test remains most precise for drug use within the preceding 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a significant method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair gives a protracted timeline of alcohol and drug use by trapping biomarkers within the strands' fibers as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair provides an approximate 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect, harder to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of about 200 hair strands (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp weighs approximately 100mg, the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be gathered. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four critical stages in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves entering a sample into a lab’s system initially. This process includes checking that the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody systems.

Screening is an initial rapid test for drug usage. Although it’s a cost-effective approach to exclude drug usage in most samples, any positive results from Screening must be confirmed for legal acceptance. Samples that show presumptive positivity in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is taken from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted at a much lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation if necessary. The whole lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating in a hair drug test is quite difficult, thus making the results more reliable.
  • Provides historical data: It offers a timeline of drug use over an extended period, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to show up in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests typically are pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
