Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Richland Center, Wisconsin. If a hair drug or alcohol screening is needed, our expertise in hair testing is supported by testing centers across all major cities Nationwide capable of performing such analyses. Generally, hair lengths of 1.5 to 2 inches from the scalp, or body hair, are required. These tests can be configured for drug, alcohol/ETG, or specific hair analysis needs.

Recently, conducting drug screenings increasingly involves hair follicle testing. Numerous employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse specialists opt for hair testing over traditional urine tests. Employers upholding strict no-drug policies, legal systems, and probationary personnel utilize hair tests. The primary advantage of hair screening is its extended drug detection window, potentially up to 90 days, collected under observation and tough to tamper with. Yet, urine tests remain most accurate for drug use detection within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term evidence of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the hair shaft. A hair sample taken near the scalp offers a detection timeframe of up to roughly 90 days for alcohol and other substances. Sampling hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A strand collection of 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 hairs (similar in diameter to a #2 pencil) from near the scalp offers 100mg, which is the optimal amount for testing and validation. For EtG tests, additional tests, and panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample weight. If scalp hair is not available, a corresponding amount of body hair can be used. The term "head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of a drug test result involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial sample processing into the laboratory's system. This checks that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and finishes any extra data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides a preliminary check for substance abuse. Though cost-efficient for eliminating drug usage on the majority of samples, a positive result in Screening requires confirmation for legal acceptability. Any samples that are initially positive in Screening must undergo further verification.

In cases of a presumptive positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other techniques (like urine or saliva), explaining why hair analysis is the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is achieved through methods like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed prior to confirmation if essential. The whole laboratory process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is under the scrutiny of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection timeframe: Hair tests can reveal drug use over a span of 90 days, while urine tests usually have a lesser detection period.
  • Difficult to manipulate: It is challenging to alter a hair drug test, ensuring higher accuracy of results.
  • Records historical use: It provides a trend of usage over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent use: Detectability in hair emerges after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other testing approaches.
  • Result variation: Factors like hair coloration and personal hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle tests in Richland Center, WI, are outperforming conventional urine screenings in several ways. While urine tests often detect recent substance use, hair testing shines through its accuracy over an extended detection period. This method reduces the chances of false negatives seen with urine tests, offering a comprehensive snapshot of an individual's drug history.

Compared to traditional urine tests, hair follicle testing boasts superior reliability and accuracy. These tests identify a broader spectrum of drugs and provide a more thorough history, potentially reaching back 90 days. This longer timeframe is crucial for employers and agencies dedicated to maintaining strict anti-drug policies.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing is known for its extended drug detection window, crucial for employers in Richland Center, WI. Unlike other methods, hair testing can capture substance use over a 90-day period, revealing an in-depth view of an employee's or candidate's drug history. This longer detection period assists in identifying patterns that go beyond short-term abstinence.

The prolonged detection range of hair testing offers a more encompassing evaluation. When employers in Richland Center are aware of an individual’s drug history, it informs better decision-making, strengthening workplace safety and policy enforcement. This detail-oriented approach is invaluable for comprehensive assessments.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Richland Center, WI, hair follicle testing is recognized for minimizing the risk of sample tampering, providing unassailable results. Unlike other testing methods, hair samples are challenging to adulterate, ensuring authenticity and reliability. This integrity is vital in contexts requiring unambiguous outcomes.

Hair tests in Richland Center bring forth a robust layer of security, thwarting attempts to alter usual sample results. With the inherent difficulty in substituting or contaminating a hair sample, stakeholders can rest assured of precise and honest results, crucial especially for judicial and employment verifications.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
