Offering extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Pulaski, Wisconsin, Accredited Drug Testing provides expertise in hair testing nationwide. With testing centers available in cities across the country, a valid hair drug or alcohol test can be performed. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. These tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other specialized options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in drug screening procedures. Many organizations, including employers and courts, favor this method over traditional urine tests. Hair testing is essential for enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies and monitoring individuals on probation. Its main advantage lies in its extended detection window, often up to 90 days, and the secured observation during collection prevents fraud. Despite this, urine tests remain optimal for detecting very recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is widely recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures a long-term record of substances by retaining biomarkers within the hairs' growing fibers. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer an alcohol and drug detection timeframe of up to 90 days. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately equivalent to the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and analyses exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to collect 150mg. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precise specimen measurement. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. In discussions of head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. All other types of hair (like facial or underarm hair) are categorized as body hair.

Process Overview

The procedure in the laboratory for evaluating a drug test involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first phase where the specimen is entered into the laboratory system. This phase includes ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive outcome requires further verification to be accepted in judicial settings. Samples with a presumptive positive outcome in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

In cases where a sample results in a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are meticulously extracted from the hair at a lower concentration than alternative methods like urine or oral fluid analysis, making hair drug analysis particularly complex to conduct.

Any positive result from Screening is confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed as needed before confirmation. The whole laboratory processing, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and with accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug analyses can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests, which have a briefer detection period.
  • Difficult to falsify: Tampering with a hair drug test is highly challenging, making the outcomes more reliable.
  • Offers historical insights: It allows for a review of drug consumption patterns over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: A duration of about 5-7 days is required before drugs are detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Differences in factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the examination focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Excels Over Urine Testing in Pulaski, WI

  • Hair testing boasts superior detection capabilities, identifying drug use up to 90 days prior, a window far exceeding traditional urine tests.
  • The accuracy of hair testing is unwavering, reliably capturing a broader substance history, while urine testing is more prone to circumvention.
  • For Pulaski employers, this longer detection period ensures a comprehensive overview of an individual's drug use history, enhancing trust and compliance.

These comparative advantages make hair testing an essential choice for thorough substance detection.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Pulaski, WI

For Pulaski-based employers seeking a comprehensive understanding of a candidate’s substance history, hair follicle drug testing offers an extended detection period of up to 90 days. This advanced capability provides a detailed account of drug usage over three months, significantly surpassing the detection window of traditional urine tests.

Incorporating this extended reach into your screening process provides valuable insights, ensuring informed decision-making with comprehensive background checks. This ability to trace back three months into an individual's drug history is invaluable for employers and substance abuse professionals.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
