In Plainfield, Wisconsin, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing services. Specializing in both drug and alcohol hair tests, we've established centers nationwide to facilitate convenient testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required. Our tests offer analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and various customized testing needs.

The adoption of hair follicle testing for drugs has surged among employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts, often replacing traditional urine testing. Favored by entities with zero-tolerance drug policies, it's an effective method for courts and probation officers. Hair testing boasts an extended detection duration of up to 90 days, involves supervised sample collection, and is nearly foolproof. However, urine tests still lead in detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective means of detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can offer nearly a 3-month period for identifying alcohol and drug usage. The collection process is straightforward, it is relatively secure against tampering, and shipping is convenient.

A sample spanning 1.5 inches and consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in thickness) near the scalp yields around 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is preferable. It is advisable to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If there’s no scalp hair, an equivalent volume of body hair is acceptable. “Head hair” indicates only scalp hair, while “body hair” encompasses all other varieties (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test includes four essential stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step in processing a sample into the lab system, involving checks to ensure the sample was properly sealed and sent, assignment of a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completion of any missing data entry that isn’t part of an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid check for substance abuse. Although cost-effective for ruling out drug usage in most samples, a positive finding during Screening necessitates confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples that test presumptively positive at this stage require further confirmation.

In the Screening phase, if a sample returns a presumptively positive result, further hair from the original sample is used for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are retrieved from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), contributing to hair drug testing's complexity.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres both to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the accreditation standards of ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with shorter windows.
  • Refined accuracy: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, ensuring accurate results.
  • Chronological data: The test offers an overview of drug consumption patterns over time, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Delayed detection: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair testing is often pricier compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests," the procedure examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests in Plainfield, WI, by offering superior accuracy and dependability. While urine tests are limited to recent drug use, hair testing extends its detection capability over a longer timeline. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
