In Oshkosh, Wisconsin, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you seek testing for drugs or alcohol, this facility excels in hair analysis and boasts testing sites in cities all across the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body suffice for most cases. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or employ other specialized hair testing options.

Over the past few years, the utilization of hair follicle drug tests has surged in popularity in conducting drug screenings. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists often prefer hair testing over conventional urine methods. Hair follicle tests are favored by organizations enforcing strict drug policies and monitoring individuals under probation. One significant advantage is the extended detection window, which can reach up to 90 days, achieved through a monitored collection method that is nearly foolproof against tampering. However, urine tests remain the go-to for identifying drug use in the immediate past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is perceived as a potent mechanism for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair creates an extended record of alcohol and other drugs by capturing biomarkers within the hairs' growth fibers. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection span of up to around three months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and easy to ship.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp furnishes 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample for testing and validation. For EtG, supplementary checks, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair isn't present, an equivalent quantity of body hair might be gathered. In context, head hair refers strictly to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for generating a drug test result comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial incorporation of a sample into the lab’s system. It involves confirming that the sample was sealed correctly, dispatched properly, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) randomly, and fulfilling any additional data entry requirements not already provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is an economical means to rule out drug use on most samples, any positive screen needs thorough verification to render it valid in court. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair from the existing specimen is utilized for Extraction. At this step, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), hence making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Verification of any positive screening is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and aligns with the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can register drug usage for up to 90 days, contrasted with urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • High resilience to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, hence the results are more precise.
  • Reveals historical patterns: It can illustrate a drug use pattern over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to surface in the hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on analyzing the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
