Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Oconto, Wisconsin. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty in hair testing is supported by numerous centers across the nation capable of conducting such assessments. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body suffices for analysis. Our hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing requirements.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly popular for drug testing. Employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse experts are more frequently opting for hair drug tests over typical urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by those upholding strict anti-drug policies, legal systems, and individuals on probation. Their advantage lies in up to a 90-day detection window, mandatory observed collections, and notable resistance to tampering. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

As a compelling resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption, hair testing is gaining recognition. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and other drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When sourced near the scalp, it can provide an approximately 90-day detection period for various substances. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment made up of about 200 hair strands (around the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample for screening and validation. For EtG, additional assessments, and tests extending over 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler's scale to measure the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair can't be obtained, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. When discussing head hair, we refer specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in the laboratory handling of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial integration of a sample into a lab's framework. This procedure includes confirming the sample’s seal and correct shipment, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial swift examination for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method for dismissing drug usage in most samples, a confirmed positive is required to be accepted in legal proceedings. Any samples that appear positive during Screening need further confirmation.

In cases where a sample shows positive during the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen and readied for Extraction. This step involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging method to execute.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumed positives are cleaned before confirmation, as needed. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specifications and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, as opposed to the shorter timeframe of urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: It's extremely challenging to deceive a hair drug test, thus ensuring higher accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug consumption over a span of time, not just recent usage.

Constraints:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: It typically takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often incur higher costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in outcomes: Aspects such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Frequently termed "hair follicle tests," these tests actually examine the hair strand itself, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
