In Oconomowoc, WI, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Specializing in hair tests, we operate testing centers nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair is sufficient for analysis. Tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other substances.

The trend in drug testing now often includes hair follicle tests. Many workplaces, courts, and substance abuse specialists prefer hair testing over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug-free policies, court-mandated participants, and probationers are typical candidates. Hair tests boast a longer detection window, reaching up to 90 days, are collected under supervision, and are difficult to deceive, though urine tests remain optimal for identifying recent use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting alcohol and drug consumption. The hair captures biomarkers within its fibers, offering an extended history of substance use. When sourced near the scalp, it can reflect a substance use history of up to roughly three months. Hair samples are easy to collect, not easily altered, and simple to mail.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp delivers 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, it's advisable to use 150mg of the sample. We suggest measuring the hair on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't an option, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be taken. By "head hair," we mean only scalp hair. "Body hair" includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results involves four major stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary processing of a specimen within a lab's framework. This step ensures the sample's seal and shipment integrity, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary, cost-effective assessment to identify drug use, but a positive screen requires verification for legal acceptance. Samples showing presumptive positives in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from the hair at concentrations lower than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair screening a challenging procedure.

Confirmation of positive screens is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive sample undergoes washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is subject to review under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection time frame: Hair tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter window.
  • Harder to falsify: A hair test is tough to deceive, making its results more reliable.
  • Provides historical insight: It can reveal a substance use pattern over time, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs are detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair testing tends to be pricier than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth can alter drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While termed "hair follicle tests", the testing examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Oconomowoc, WI emphasizes the superiority of hair follicle testing over urine testing. Hair tests offer longer detection periods, surveying drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, limited to recent use. This extensive window positions hair tests as a robust method for evaluating an individual’s drug history and understanding patterns.

The reliability of hair testing is unmatched, often difficult to adulterate and fail-safe against bypassing attempts. Employers benefit from this trustworthy testing, enforcing drug-free workspace policies. While effective for short-term identification, urine lacks hair's extensive detection range and reliability.

Extended Detection Window

In Oconomowoc, WI, hair follicle drug testing is pivotal for its extensive detection window. As it captures up to 90 days of substance use, it allows employers to gain a more comprehensive understanding of an individual's habits. This period is crucial when evaluating candidates or monitoring ongoing employee compliance with drug-free workplace initiatives.

Unlike shorter-term testing methods, the extended timeframe of hair tests offers insights beyond immediate detection. For long-term substance use histories, hair analysis provides an expansive and informative perspective that proves invaluable for employers dedicated to maintaining a drug-free environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Oconomowoc, WI, stands out due to its tamper-resistant nature. This method significantly minimizes the potential for sample manipulation, ensuring results are authentic and dependable. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
