Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Kiel, Wisconsin. For those requiring a hair or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis, with centers available in numerous cities across the nation that can administer a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head hair are required, although body hair may also be used. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored hair testing solutions.

In recent times, drug testing procedures have increasingly incorporated hair follicle analysis. Many workplaces, judicial systems, and addiction specialists are opting for hair tests over the traditional urine tests. Hair follicle testing is favored by employers with strict anti-drug policies, legal authorities, and those on probation. The major advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended drug detection window, lasting up to 90 days, conducted under supervision, making it almost foolproof. Despite this, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair evaluations have emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures a historical record of substances by embedding markers in the growing strand. When clipped near the scalp, hair can reveal substance use over an estimated 3-month period. Collection is straightforward, it is fairly resistant to tampering, and transport is simple.

A 1.5-inch snippet comprising approximately 200 hairs (comparable in girth to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg, the ideal quantity for analysis. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding ten, a 150mg sample is advisable. Use a jeweler’s scale for precise weighing. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair can suffice. The term "head hair" denotes scalp hair specifically, while "body hair" pertains to all other categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial intake procedure for a sample into the lab’s system. It includes confirming the proper sealing and transport of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handling any further data input not addressed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary overview for drug abuse indicators. Screening offers a cost-effective method to eliminate drug involvement in most cases; however, for legal acceptability, a positive result must undergo confirmation. Samples testing presumptively positive in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

Should a sample exhibit presumptively positive results in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug evaluation particularly challenging.

Post-screening confirmation of positive results is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positives are cleansed as required. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing reveals drug usage over as much as 90 days, unlike urine tests with a more limited timeframe.
  • Difficult to evade: The accurate outcomes of a hair drug test are hard to tamper with.
  • Offers usage pattern insights: Provides a timeline of substance consumption, not merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Non-detection of recent usage: It generally takes drugs about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result fluctuations: Drug metabolite concentrations in hair can be influenced by factors like hair color and individual growth variations.

Note: Referring to these as "hair follicle tests" is a misnomer since the analysis targets the strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
