Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments right in Darien, Wisconsin. Whether it's a drug or alcohol test you require, our expertise in hair testing is supported by centers in every city nationwide, ready to carry out these assessments. Typically, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the head or body. Hair tests are capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for other specific testing requirements.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has gained prominence in drug assessment methods. Many companies, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, legal systems, and probation officers choose this method for its extended detection window of approximately 90 days and its rigorous collection process. Yet, for drug use detection within five days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers in the growing hair fibers. When harvested near the scalp, hair offers up to roughly a 3-month window for detecting drugs and alcohol. Hair is easy to gather, relatively tamper-proof, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing around 200 hair strands (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the perfect amount for both screening and confirmation procedures. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is lacking, an equivalent portion of body hair can be used. Concerning head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair indicates all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial handling of a sample into a lab’s system. This process includes checking that the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial swift evaluation for abusive drugs. While Screening serves as a cost-effective method to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be acceptable in legal contexts. Any samples that show a presumptive positive during Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample is presumptive positive during the Screening phase, further hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at a considerably lower concentration than in other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the hardest method to conduct.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if needed. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can recognize drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a briefer detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is quite difficult, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Provides historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Doesn't detect recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for substances to become visible in hair.
  • Expenses: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the actual test examines the hair strand, not the follicle found under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
