Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Burlington, WI. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, our centers specialize in such testing and are available in all cities nationwide. Hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the crown or body is usually needed. This method analyzes substances like drugs and alcohol with customized options available.

Hair follicle testing has become more prevalent in recent years for drug detection. This test is being favored by employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts over traditional urine tests. The primary advantage of hair testing is its longer detection period, up to 90 days, collected under supervision, offering nearly cheat-proof results. Despite its benefits, urine remains the most precise for recent substance use within a five-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations have emerged as an effective means for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair serves as a chronicle of long-term drug and alcohol use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers as the hair strand develops. When procured near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs of up to roughly 3 months. Hair is effortless to gather, relatively challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch snippet of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the breadth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and verification. For EtG enhancements and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, a recommendation of 150mg of the sample is advised. It is advisable to ascertain the specimen's weight using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unobtainable, a comparable quantity of body hair might be harvested. When mentioning head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other hair varieties (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages for laboratory processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab’s framework. This involves affirming that the sample was suitably sealed and dispatched, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data input absent from an electronic custody chain system.

Screening entails an initial rapid examination for drug misuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly approach for excluding drug use across most samples, any positive screen must be validated to be legally admissible. Samples that preliminarily test positive during Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

In cases where a sample is preliminarily positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. At this juncture, drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most complex methodology to execute.

Validation of any positive screen result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive sample is cleansed prior to validation where warranted. The whole laboratory procedure spanning Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the endorsement of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug examinations can identify drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Supplies historical insights: It furnishes a timeline of drug usage over a duration, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting immediate use: Drugs become perceptible in hair approximately 5-7 days post-usage.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations generally exceed other methods in cost.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair hue and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration within the hair.

Note: While commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the examination evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
