Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Baraboo, Wisconsin. Specializing in hair testing, we have centers nationwide proficient in conducting these tests, whether for drugs or alcohol. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is needed from the scalp or body. These tests can screen for a variety of substances including drugs and alcohol/ETG.

Hair follicle testing has gained popularity as a method for drug detection in recent years. An increasing number of employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. This method offers a significant advantage for entities with a zero-tolerance drug policy due to its extended detection period of up to 90 days, its observed collection process, and its resistance to tampering. However, for identifying drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Examining hair has emerged as a robust technique for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and other substances by locking biomarkers within the growing strand's fibers. When gathered closely to the scalp, hair can offer an approximate three-month detection span for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, difficult to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of around 200 strands (similar to a #2 pencil) from the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for analysis and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the hair is advisable. It's recommended to measure the hair on a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is not present, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair signifies all other types (beard, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The chief stages in the lab processing of a drug result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial sample intake into the lab’s system. This task involves ensuring proper sealing and transport of the sample, allotting a random LAN (Lab Accessioning Code), along with carrying out additional data entry not supplied by an electronic custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assay for substance abuse. Screening offers an affordable means to exclude most samples' drug usage. However, for legal admissibility, positive results require confirmation. All presumptively positive samples from Screening need a follow-up verification.

Should the sample be presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. Here, substances are separated from hair at far lower concentrations than other techniques (like urine or saliva), which is why hair testing is the most complex analysis method.

Verification of any preliminary positive result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before verification, all presumptively positive samples undergo necessary washing. The total lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests may identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine assessments with a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: It's extremely challenging to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring greater accuracy of the outcomes.
  • Gives historical insight: It can reveal a timeline of drug consumption over a duration, not solely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs become noticeable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than alternative testing approaches.
  • Fluctuations in outcomes: Variables such as hair hue and personal growth differences can influence metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", the exam actually assesses the strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
