In Amery, Wisconsin, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Expert in both drug and alcohol hair testing, we have centers nationwide ready to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required, either from the scalp or body. These tests can screen for various substances, including drugs and alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other specific testing needs.

Over the past few years, hair follicle testing has become increasingly common for drug screening. Employers, judicial systems, and addiction specialists are choosing hair testing over traditional urine tests. Not only does hair testing align with strict no-drug policies, but it also offers a much longer window for detecting drug use — up to 90 days. The sample is collected under supervision, reducing the possibility of tampering, though urine tests remain more precise for recent drug use within a five-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains information on alcohol and drug intake over a lengthy period by capturing biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug use up to around a 3-month timeframe. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with about 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, extra tests, and/or more than 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equal quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" pertains solely to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other varieties (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in laboratory processing of drug test outcomes: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning procedures involve initializing a sample into a laboratory’s database. This step includes ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data inputs absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary check for drug abuse. Although it provides a cost-effective method to dismiss drug usage for most samples, a positive screen must be verified for court acceptance. Samples that test presumptive positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a speciman tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug testing is considered the most intricate process.

Positive screening confirmations are conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation if needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation undergoes inspection both under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and meets ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing captures drug usage up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter period detected by urine tests.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test proves challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Chronological data: It illustrates a history of drug consumption over time, not solely recent uses.

Limitations:

  • Recent use detection limitation: Drugs become noticeable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth rate can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand rather than the follicle underneath the skin

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Amery, WI, hair follicle testing stands out compared to urine tests due to its superior detection capabilities and reliability. Hair testing boasts a longer detection period, accurately capturing substance use up to 90 days prior. This means employers and other entities get a clear picture of an individual's drug history, which cannot be easily manipulated or obscured.

Precision and dependability are hallmarks of hair follicle testing. The meticulous process involved ensures accurate results that are hard to dispute, providing clarity and assurance when assessing drug use. Potential manipulation, a concern with urine tests, is largely mitigated with hair testing.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Amery, WI benefit greatly from hair follicle drug tests' extensive detection window, ranging up to 90 days. This feature provides a far-reaching insight into a person's drug consumption history, offering a thorough review of their substance use behavior over time, beyond the immediate 5-7 day scope of urine tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
