Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Wheeling, West Virginia. For those requiring hair drug or alcohol analyses, we specialize in hair examinations, with testing facilities in all cities across the country capable of conducting a hair test. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the scalp or alternative body hair may be used for most scenarios. Hair assessments can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing solutions.

Over recent years, drug testing methodologies increasingly incorporate hair follicle screenings. Numerous companies, judiciary systems, and Substance Abuse specialists are opting for hair drug tests over conventional urine evaluations. Hair follicle examinations are favored by businesses with stringent drug use policies, courts, and individuals under probation. The chief advantage of a hair follicle test is its notably extended detection timeframe, typically up to 90 days, conducted under supervised collection, rendering it virtually unassailable to deceit. Yet, for identifying drug use within the prior 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the strands, hair provides a long-term account of drug use. When cut close to the scalp, hair can reveal a history of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. It's easy to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A hair specimen of 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 strands (roughly equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp, yields 100mg, an optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. Measuring the specimen is recommended using a jeweler’s scale. In cases where head hair is not available, an equal measure of body hair can be used. Head hair pertains solely to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other kinds (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory drug testing procedure consists of four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails initial sample processing in the laboratory’s system, ensuring proper sealing and shipment, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing necessary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening serves as a preliminary evaluation for drug presence. Although cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most samples, positive results necessitate confirmation for legal validity. Samples with potential positives require additional verification.

Should Screening indicate a presumptive positive, more hair from the original sample is prepared for Extraction. Drugs are drawn from hair at concentrations much lower than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), adding to the challenge of hair drug analysis.

Confirming positive screenings employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. If needed, presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation. The entire workflow, from Accessioning to Confirmation, meets both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Challenging to deceive: It's notably hard to fake a hair drug test, making results more reliable.
  • Offers historical insights: It reveals patterns of drug use over time, beyond recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of recent detection: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after 5-7 days.
  • Expensive: Hair drug assessments generally incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Varying outcomes: Elements like hair color and personal growth rates can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", these assessments examine the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
