Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair drug testing services in South Charleston, WV. For individuals needing drug or alcohol testing, they excel in hair analysis with locations nationwide to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required, either from the head or body. Hair assessments are versatile, capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specific testing needs.

The trend for drug testing methods has shifted towards hair follicle analysis, being favored by employers, judiciary bodies, and substance abuse professionals over urine tests. Hair tests serve employers with strict no-drug policies, the court system, and individuals on probation. A key advantage of hair testing is its extended detection window for substance use, reaching up to 90 days, performed under supervised conditions, and is exceptionally challenging to circumvent. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a highly effective method for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. Hair records a prolonged timeline of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair fiber. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer a detection span of up to three months for both alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (resembling the thickness of a #2 pencil) cut closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair—the ideal quantity for both screening and verifying. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, a sample weight of 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for measurement is suggested. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a proportional amount of body hair is an alternative. By head hair, we specify scalp hair alone. Body hair encompasses all other variants (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for analyzing a drug test result mainly involves four steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a specimen is logged into a lab’s system. This step ensures that the sample is appropriately sealed and shipped, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any remaining data entries absent from an electronic custody chain.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. Although an economical process to eliminate drug use in the majority of specimens, a positive screening must be confirmed for court admissibility. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening indeed require a follow-up confirmation.

If the Screening step yields a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample to prep for Extraction. During this step, substances are extracted from hair at minimal concentrations compared to other methods (i.e., urine or saliva), which makes hair drug testing a particularly intricate method to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire procedural workflow from Accessioning through Confirmation is subject to review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Sustained detection duration: Hair testing is capable of identifying substance use for a duration extending up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a narrower detection period.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly challenging, enhancing the reliability of the results.
  • Yields temporal data: It provides a comprehensive overview of substance use over time, rather than merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent usage: Drugs require about 5-7 days to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs greater costs compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Result variance: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests," this test actually assesses the hair shaft and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in South Charleston, WV, is preferred over urine tests due to its superior detection accuracy. Unlike traditional tests, hair tests offer an extended period for drug identification, virtually eliminating opportunities for tampering. While urine might detect recent usage, hair follicles provide a lasting timeline of substance use.

The distinct advantage of hair drug tests over urine is their more robust detection window. South Charleston companies adopting these tests benefit from their stringent accuracy, ensuring a reliable assessment of an individual's drug use history, thereby supporting informed decision-making.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in South Charleston, WV, stands out for its ability to detect drug use over an extended period, providing a comprehensive view of substance use history up to 90 days. This capability allows employers to gain insights into a candidate's past behavior, leading to informed hiring choices.

The broader detection window of hair tests supports employment practices by revealing long-term drug usage trends. This aspect is crucial in South Charleston's competitive landscape, as it empowers companies to enhance their recruitment processes by understanding potential hires' habits over significant time frames.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
