Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Kingwood, WV. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, our expertise in hair testing ensures coverage in every major city across the country. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body is typically needed. Tests can determine drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized analyzes.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent for drug screening. Employers, courts, and substance abuse authorities now prefer hair tests over urine tests. Employers with strict policies, courts, and probation requirements benefit from hair follicle tests due to an extended detection window of up to 90 days, thorough oversight during sample collection, and reduced susceptibility to tampering. However, urine tests remain more effective for detecting usage within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands naturally preserve a history of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers as the hair grows. Collected from near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection timeframe of up to 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. It is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of roughly 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, the ideal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional panels, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. We advocate weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If head hair isn't available, a comparable amount of body hair can be taken. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning initiates with processing the sample into the lab’s system. This encompasses ensuring the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a quick initial check for substance abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be accepted in legal contexts. Any samples indicated as positive in Screening need further confirmation.

Should a sample be marked presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair in much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most challenging method.

Confirmation of any positive result from screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if required. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • High resistance to tampering: It is incredibly challenging to cheat a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage data: It provides a drug use pattern over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect immediate usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth patterns can impact the drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When compared to traditional urine tests, hair follicle testing in Kingwood, WV stands out due to its superior detection accuracy and reliability. The longevity and scope of hair testing provide an expanded window of substance detection. With its comprehensive analysis, it effectively counters the limitations seen in conventional urine tests.

Incorporating innovative methodologies, hair testing surpasses urine testing in precision. Its increased sensitivity amplifies the detection of a wide range of substances. Unlike urine tests, which are often restricted in detection periods, hair testing in Kingwood presents a more in-depth understanding of drug use.

Extended Detection Window

Kingwood, WV's hair follicle testing offers an impressive detection window, capturing drug use from up to 90 days prior. This expanded timeframe facilitates a more thorough evaluation of an individual's substance usage history. Employers benefit by gaining a clearer picture of an employee's or prospect's past substance use, aiding informed decision-making.

Distinctly advantageous, the prolonged detection window of hair testing surpasses traditional methods. This extended review period positions hair follicle testing as an exceptional choice when assessing long-term substance involvement, revealing patterns that may not be detectable through shorter-term tests commonly used.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Kingwood's hair follicle test is a tamper-proof methodology, greatly reducing the chances of sample adulteration. By using a rigorous collection process, it ensures that samples are reliable and that results are accurate and unassailable. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
