Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Fayetteville, West Virginia. If you require a hair or alcohol test, our expertise in hair analysis enables us to cater to your needs, with testing sites available in every city across the Nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Hair analysis can reveal drug, alcohol/ETG use, or be tailored for specific testing requirements.

In recent times, the preference for drug screenings has shifted towards hair follicle tests. This shift is driven by the demands of employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals for more reliable alternatives to traditional urine tests. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, legal jurisdictions, and probation programs favor hair analysis. Its main advantage lies in the extended detection window, lasting up to 90 days, observed collection process, and resistance to tampering. However, urine testing remains optimal for detecting drug use within the prior five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly regarded as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive record of substance use by encasing biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer an approximated three-month period for detecting alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is easy, difficult to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A segment of hair measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) taken from the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for tests and validation. For EtG, extended panels, and tests over 10 panels, a sample size of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other types, such as facial or underarm hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test involves four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is logged into a laboratory’s system. This step includes ensuring that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data input absent from an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening provides an initial quick assessment for drug presence. Although Screening is cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most cases, a positive Screening result must be validated for court admissibility. All samples testing positive in Screening require confirmation.

Should a sample test positive in Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other testing methods (like urine or oral fluids), which is why hair drug analysis is the most challenging to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All positive samples undergo washing before Confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is monitored under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guideline and accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair test is extremely challenging, enhancing the reliability of the results.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent activity.

Constraints:

  • Unable to detect recent drug use: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug screenings tend to be more costly than alternative testing options.
  • Result variations: Hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the actual test evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Fayetteville, WV, hair follicle testing offers advantages over traditional urine testing, proving its superiority through more accurate and reliable detection. While urine tests may identify recent drug use, hair testing clearly beats with its extended detection window and precision in picking up traces over time. For companies and institutions upholding drug-free policies, hair testing attracts more due to its robust results.

Comparing the benefits of hair follicle testing with traditional urine tests in Fayetteville, WV demonstrates the superior detection accuracy of the former. While urine tests can only reflect recent drug use, hair analysis offers a more extensive view by capturing usage patterns over a longer timeframe. Employers requiring comprehensive assessments endorse hair testing for its reliability in monitoring substance use.

Extended Detection Window

Extended detection is a standout feature of hair follicle drug testing in Fayetteville, WV, covering a usage timeframe of up to 90 days. Compared to urine tests, which have a limited window, hair testing provides employers with a full picture of an individual's substance history. Whether used for hiring decisions or routine checks, this broader window enables informed evaluations of drug use patterns, easing compliance with workplace regulations.

With a detection window prolonged to 90 days, hair follicle testing in Fayetteville, WV provides a much broader scope of substance history than urine tests. This extended period is crucial for employers seeking comprehensive insights into an applicant or employee's past drug use. Armed with this information, employers can make proactive decisions to cultivate a safe and drug-free workplace.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Employers in Fayetteville, WV, often contended with complaints of adulteration in drug testing. However, hair follicle tests incorporate a tamper-resistant technology that minimizes such risks. The hair sample for analysis is collected under observation, leaving no scope for manipulation. Hence, the reliability and validity of these tests make them preferred over conventional methods, offering unchallengeable results.

In Fayetteville, WV, hair follicle testing is the definitive solution for ensuring the integrity of drug tests. The tamper-resistant nature of hair testing precludes sample adulteration, even when taken from the original collection. This reduces the possibility of obtaining false negative results, allowing institutions to rely confidently on the outcome in high-stakes situations like legal proceedings or employment screening.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
