Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Boomer, West Virginia. For those in need of drug or alcohol analysis via hair, we are the specialists. With testing facilities in cities across the nation, we can perform the necessary hair testing. Typically, hair length should range from 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or elsewhere. Hair tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for other uses.

Recently, hair follicle drug evaluation has gained popularity for substance testing. It is now preferred by many employers, legal systems, and substance treatment experts over the conventional urine method. Hair tests are utilized by employers with strict no-drug policies, by courts, and for probation requirements. The chief advantage is its longer detection window, often up to 90 days, captured in a supervised manner, making it nearly foolproof. Yet for detection within 5 days, urine testing retains its accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments are increasingly recognized as an effective means for tracking drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands offer an extended timeline of substance use by entrapping biomarkers within the hair fiber structure. Collected near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use for up to about 90 days. It is straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil width) nearest to the scalp, yields about 100mg of hair, considered ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-on tests, or those beyond 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is preferred. Utilizing a jeweler's scale to weigh the specimen is advised. If head hair is not accessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" denotes all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result entails four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the first phase of incorporating a sample into a lab’s system. This includes checking that the sample is properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data input not managed by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for drug presence. Though Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires further confirmation for court admissibility. Samples showing presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positive results during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial collection and prepped for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair in this stage at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening is technically more challenging.

Confirming any positive screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples showing presumptive positives are cleaned before confirmation where needed. The entire lab workflow, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed against both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug tests:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests identify drug use over a 90-day span, surpassing the shorter detection windows of urine tests.
  • Hard to fake: Attempting to cheat a hair test is tough, thereby enhancing result precision.
  • Tracks historical usage: It presents a pattern of drug use over a timeline, not limited to recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days following use.
  • Expense: Hair testing is typically pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
