Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing services across West End, Washington. If you require a test for drugs or alcohol, our hair analysis services are available nationwide, including numerous testing centers across the country. Generally, a hair sample from the crown or body as long as 1.5 to 2 inches is required. This testing method is applicable for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized analyses.

Over the years, the popularity of hair follicle drug testing has increased significantly. It is now a preferred choice for employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals compared to traditional urine testing. Employers with strict anti-drug use policies often choose hair testing because, unlike urine tests, it offers a detection window of up to 90 days and is almost impossible to falsify due to supervised collection. However, when the need is to detect recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain more effective.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has increasingly become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a record for the long-term intake of alcohol and other drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When samples are collected close to the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month detection window for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively challenging to tamper with, and easy to ship.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of around 200 strands of hair (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a recommended 150mg of the specimen is needed. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is advisable. If scalp hair is absent, a similar quantity of body hair can be gathered. When speaking of head hair, we refer only to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for obtaining a drug test result is composed of four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves initially processing a sample into a laboratory’s system. This process includes verifying that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any remaining data entry that is not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective approach to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in court. Presumptive positive samples in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

In instances where a sample is presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for preparation in the Extraction phase. At this stage, drugs are drawn out from hair at a much lower concentration than through other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed, if necessary, before confirmation. The extensive process from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen in alignment with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair categorization and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a briefer detection timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: It is highly challenging to falsify a hair drug test, leading to more precise results.
  • Delivers historical data: It can outline a trend of drug consumption over time, rather than indicating only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect immediate use: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become discernible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally costlier than other drug testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: While often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is actually conducted on the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In West End, WA, hair follicle testing has proven to be superior to urine testing due to its extended detection capabilities. Unlike urine tests, hair tests can reveal a much longer snapshot of substance use history, thereby offering a comprehensive overview. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
