Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Union Gap, Washington. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, and we maintain testing centers in all cities nationwide capable of conducting a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the crown of the head or body. Hair tests offer analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

In recent times, the hair follicle drug test has increasingly been adopted for drug testing purposes. A multitude of employers, legal authorities, and Substance Abuse experts are favoring hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Entities with zero-tolerance drug policies, such as employers, courts, and probationary individuals, utilize hair follicle tests for their primary advantage—a detection window lasting up to 90 days, ensuring an observed collection process that is notoriously difficult to manipulate. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the gold standard for detecting drug use in the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug molecules by embedding them within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When hair is gathered near the scalp, it can indicate drug and alcohol use within an approximate 3-month timeframe. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of around 200 hair strands (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal amount for initial testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and panels exceeding ten, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. References to head hair pertain exclusively to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary phases in the laboratory processing of drug test results: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial handling of a sample within the laboratory system. This step involves checking that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data entry not addressed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening encompasses an initial swift drug abuse examination. Screening offers a cost-efficient approach for discounting drug use in most samples, although a positive result requires confirmation to be legally valid. Samples that register as presumptively positive during Screening require subsequent verification.

Upon a presumptive positive result at the Screening phase, additional hair is withdrawn from the initial sample for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at reduced concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Positive Screening outcomes undergo validation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. From Accessioning through Confirmation, the laboratory process adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers chronic data: Presents a timeline of substance use over prolonged durations, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of showing recent activity: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair strands.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other testing procedures.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair pigmentation and personal growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the assessment targets the hair strands, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Union Gap, WA
Hair follicle tests offer greater detection accuracy and reliability than traditional urine tests. The extended detection window of hair testing spans up to 90 days, providing a more comprehensive substance use profile. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
