Offering comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Hunters, Washington, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to for reliable assessments. Whether it's for drugs or alcohol detection, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with facilities spread across every city Nationwide. For the test, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, typically sourced from the crown or the body. This method allows for analysis of drugs, ETG/alcohol, and more tailored testing options.

In the evolving landscape of drug testing, the hair follicle test is gaining prominence. Employers, legal bodies, and Substance Abuse experts now often prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Particularly for organizations with strict no-drug policies, this method provides assurance. Its key advantage lies in its extended detection period, reaching up to 90 days, and a process that's hard to skew. However, for pinpointing recent usage within five days, urine tests remain a precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now perceived as a strong method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a lengthy history of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair offers up to roughly a 3-month detection span for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of about 200 strands of hair (similar to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, it refers to scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage of processing a sample within a lab’s system. This step checks that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes a primary rapid check for drugs of abuse. While Screening is cost-efficient to rule out drug usage on most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal proceedings. Any samples that test presumptively positive during Screening require additional confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity in Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are removed from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the toughest methods to perform.

Confirmation for any positive Screening result is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples must be cleansed prior to confirmation as needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical data: Capable of providing a pattern of drug use over time, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
