Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Tappahannock, Virginia. Whether you require a hair-based drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing excels in these tests, with facilities across all cities nationwide ready to perform them. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can generally be tested. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom options.

Recently, more organizations have turned to hair follicle drug testing methods. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. This switch caters to zero-tolerance drug policies at workplaces, courts, and for individuals on probation. Hair tests offer longer drug detection—up to 90 days, are conducted under observation, and are hard to tamper with. For screening recent drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It chronicles a prolonged history of substance intake by encasing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When the sample is taken near the scalp, it offers a detection timeframe of up to around 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) from near the scalp, yields 100mg—an optimal quantity for both initial tests and confirmatory analysis. For EtG, additional substances, and tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale is recommended to measure the hair's weight. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, only the scalp hair is implied. Body hair encompasses all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process of laboratory examination of a drug test outcome involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is integrated into the lab’s system. This step ensures the sample is sealed and sent properly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary evaluation for substances of abuse. Though Screening is a budget-friendly strategy to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive result requires validation for legal acceptability. Samples with likely positive results in Screening need further confirmation.

If a specimen shows presumptive positives during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. At this point, drugs are isolated in the hair at considerably lower concentrations than in alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral samples), demonstrating why hair drug screening is the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All preliminary positive samples undergo washing if necessary before confirmation. The whole lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, complies with CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and meets ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing identifies drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer shorter detection terms.
  • Challenging to falsify: It's extremely tough to outmaneuver a hair drug test, enhancing the reliability of the results.
  • Delivers historical insights: It reveals a pattern of drug consumption over an interval, rather than just detecting recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the levels of drug residues in the hair.

Note: Though frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination pertains only to the hair strand—not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
