In Stone Ridge, Virginia, Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you require drug or alcohol testing, our expertise lies in hair analysis, with centers available across Nationwide to facilitate your testing needs. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary. Hair testing options span drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored assessments.

The routine use of hair follicle drug tests has surged, with many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts adopting this method over traditional urine tests. This testing is essential for entities and individuals subject to zero-tolerance drug policies, as it highlights use over approximately 90 days, is conducted under observation, and is resistant to tampering. For detecting recent drug use, within five days, urine tests remain unmatched.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can serve as a long-term record for alcohol and other substances by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer up to nearly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and illicit substances. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is perfect for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional panels, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It is advisable to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. In the context of head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary steps in processing a drug test result in the lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step where a sample is processed into the laboratory’s system. This entails verifying that the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid check for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective approach to exclude drug use in most samples, any positive results require confirmation for them to be used in court. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary validation.

For samples that are presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a more challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that test presumptively positive are cleansed prior to confirmation if needed. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: It is quite challenging to trick a hair drug test, thus ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a trend of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often cost more compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to traditional urine testing in Stone Ridge, VA, the advantages are clear. Hair tests boast a longer detection period, identifying substance use up to 90 days post-consumption, while urine tests primarily cover recent use within a short timeframe.

The superior reliability of hair testing, enhanced by the impossibility of sample tampering, positions it as a more robust method, especially for environments with zero-tolerance policies.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Stone Ridge, VA, offers an extended detection window of up to 90 days, far surpassing other testing methods. This allows employers a comprehensive view of an individual's substance use history.

Such an extensive detection period ensures that organizations and professionals can make informed decisions based on a more complete understanding of an applicant or employee's historical substance use.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The integrity of hair follicle testing in Stone Ridge, VA, lies in its tamper-resistant nature. These tests are collected securely, making it highly challenging for individuals to tamper with or adulterate the sample.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
