Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Richmond, Virginia. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty is hair testing, with centers available nationwide, including all cities that can carry out these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or elsewhere can be used for analysis. Hair tests are suitable for detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific options needed.

In the last few years, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly favored for drug screening procedures. Various entities such as employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair drug testing over conventional urine testing. This method is preferred by employers with stringent no-drug policies, by courts, and for those on probation. Hair follicle tests offer a significant benefit through a longer detection window, extending up to 90 days. These tests require observation during sample collection and offer high resistance to tampering. However, for determining recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying substance and alcohol usage. Hair captures a prolonged timeline of substance use by retaining biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When sourced near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and other substance presence up to about a 3-month lookout timeframe. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A snippet of 1.5 inches, roughly 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's width), cut closest to the scalp yields 100mg, the perfect sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, ancillary tests, and/or evaluations beyond 10 panels, 150mg is advised. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale to determine specimen weight. If head hair is unattainable, an equivalent quantity of body hair is another option. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. In contrast, body hair encompasses all other forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedural sequence for processing a drug test in a laboratory includes four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning means the initial incorporation of a sample into the lab’s system. This encompasses ensuring the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any remaining data input absent from an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening denotes an initial succinct evaluation for substances of misuse. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient means to exclude substance use in most samples, any positive Screen must be confirmed for legal proceedings. Samples preliminarily positive in Screening mandate a secondary confirmation step.

Should a sample suggest a positive result during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, substances are isolated from hair at a significantly lesser concentration than in other approaches (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug evaluation is considered particularly complex to execute.

Affirmation of any positive screening outcome is undertaken using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicating preliminary positivity are cleansed prior to confirmation when necessary. Both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair qualification and ISO / IEC 17025 standards oversight the comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation.

Benefits of hair drug examinations:

  • Prolonged detection timeframe: Hair substance assessments can reveal substance usage for as much as 90 days, unlike urine evaluations, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug exam is considerably difficult, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: This process can reveal a timeline of substance usage, not merely recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of spotting recent usage: It generally takes about 5-7 days for substances to be identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments tend to cost more than alternative examination methods.
  • Result inconsistencies: Variables like hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence the metabolite concentration in the hair.

Clarification: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination itself evaluates the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
