In New Kent, Virginia, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing solutions. If seeking a hair-based drug or alcohol assessment, our expertise in hair testing ensures accessible services nationwide, including local facilities. A hair sample, typically 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body, is needed for most tests. These evaluations can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer more tailored hair testing alternatives.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing has become a staple in comprehensive drug screening methods. Preferred by numerous employers, judicial entities, and substance abuse specialists, it offers an extended detection window compared to urine tests. Chosen by zero-tolerance companies, legal systems, and probation oversight, it reveals drug use for up to 90 days. It's collected under observation, reducing chances of manipulation. Yet, for detecting very recent drug use, urine tests remain preferable within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. It offers a comprehensive history of substance intake by embedding biomarkers in the hair strand as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can detect alcohol and drugs for up to about 90 days. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample with roughly 200 strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the perfect amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is suggested. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedures for processing a drug test result in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the preliminary processing of a sample into the lab’s system. It ensures the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills in any extra data not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-effective method for eliminating drug use in most cases, a positive result must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples that screen positive require subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample test positive during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations much lower than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug testing a challenging task.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples undergo washing, if necessary, before confirmation. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guideline and ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to fake: It is notably challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insights: It reveals a pattern of substance use over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs are detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Inconsistent findings: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle itself beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
