Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Manassas, Virginia. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities in every city across the nation to facilitate these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the scalp or body. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to other specific testing needs.

Recently, the preference for conducting drug tests has increasingly shifted to hair follicle analysis. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for this method over standard urine tests. Organizations with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and those on probation often use hair follicle tests. The main advantage lies in its extended detection window, which reaches up to 90 days and involves a witnessing collection process that's virtually foolproof. Despite this, for detecting drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain the benchmark for accuracy.

What it is, How it works

The emergence of hair testing has positioned it as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a chronological record of alcohol and other drug usage by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of hair that are growing. When gathered near the scalp, hair offers up to a three-month window of detection for alcohol and other substances. It's easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample, approximately 200 strands, similar in size to a #2 pencil, situated closest to the scalp equals 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG testing, add-ons, or screenings exceeding 10 panels, it's suggested to use 150mg of the sample. Using a jeweler’s scale for precision weighing is advocated. If scalp hair can't be obtained, an equivalent portion of body hair can be taken. The term head hair specifically implies scalp hair, while body hair encompasses any other types of hair (like facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The procedure for processing drug test results in a lab comprises four steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the first phase, where a sample enters a lab's system. This phase entails confirming the sample’s proper sealing and shipment, the allocation of a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and the completion of any missing data not supplied by an e-chain of custody system.

The Screening phase conducts an initial preliminary check for the presence of drugs. Although Screening offers a cost-friendly approach to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive outcome requires further confirmation for courtroom admissibility. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

When a sample is found potentially positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen to prepare for the Extraction phase. In this step, drugs are distilled from hair at a much lower concentration level than in other testing approaches (like urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

To confirm a positive screening outcome, methods like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS are employed. Any presumptive positive samples undergo washing before the confirmation step if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is carefully scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests are capable of uncovering drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which cover a shorter period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is highly challenging, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: It demonstrates a drug use pattern over an extended duration, not just recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of identifying recent consumption: It generally requires about 5-7 days for drugs to be visible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically come at a higher cost compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual growth differences may influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" often applies, yet the actual analysis targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
