Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing for drug detection in Franklin, Virginia. If you require a drug or alcohol hair test, our expertise in hair testing is unparalleled, and we operate testing sites across cities nationwide to provide this service. For most tests, about 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body may be used. Hair assessments can pinpoint drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored hair test options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly prevalent for drug detection. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse counselors now often prefer hair testing over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by organizations maintaining strict drug-free policies, judicial bodies, and individuals on probation. The significant advantage lies in the extended window of detection of up to 90 days, alongside an observed collection process that is difficult to manipulate. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use within the recent 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug consumption by embedding biomarkers within the strands as the hair grows. When retrieved near the scalp, hair can reveal approximately a three-month drug and alcohol detection period. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) from near the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and verification. For EtG enhancements and/or tests involving more than 10 panels, a 150mg hair sample is advised. It's suggested to measure the hair weight using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When referring to head hair, it pertains specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (like facial or underarm hair).

Process Overview

The drug testing results at the laboratory proceed through four pivotal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial input of a sample into a lab’s system. This step ensures the sample is properly sealed and transported, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills in any supplementary data not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary method for detecting drug abuse. Screening offers a cost-efficient approach to identifying drug use in most cases, yet a positive indication needs further verification to hold up in legal settings. Any samples that show a presumption of positivity during Screening mandate additional confirmation.

Should the Screening phase indicate a presumptive positive, extra hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are withdrawn from the hair at a lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or saliva), marking hair drug screening as one of the most challenging methodologies.

Verification of any positive Screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to verification, presumptive positive samples undergo washing based on requirement. The full laboratory operation from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation as well as the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditations.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screenings can trace drug use up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • Tough to manipulate: The results of a hair drug screening are more verifiable, due to the difficulty in manipulating the test.
  • Delivers historical insights: It reveals a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent actions.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs typically take about 5-7 days to become noticeable in hair samples.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug screenings are generally more costly compared to alternate drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair shade and personal hair growth differences can influence the metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Despite being frequently called "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair strand rather than the follicle underneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
