Located in Cumberland, Virginia, Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug screening services. For those requiring a hair test to screen for drugs or alcohol, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in this precise method, offering facilities across all cities Nationwide proficient in conducting the test. Generally, a length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp is needed, though body hair may suffice in some situations. Hair tests can assess for various substances, including drugs and alcohol/ETG, and can be customized as needed.

The popularity of hair follicle drug tests has been on the rise, replacing urine tests for many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts requiring stringent adherence to drug policies. This testing method is favored by zero-tolerance workplaces and legal institutions for its extended detection window, capturing drug use for up to 90 days in a verified collection setting. This makes tampering nearly impossible. Nonetheless, for identifying drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the more precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is considered a vital technique for recognizing drug and alcohol consumption. Through capturing biomarkers in the fibers of the growing hair strand, hair offers a prolonged timeline of substance use. When taken from close to the scalp, hair can ensure a detection window of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch section of about 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advocate measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair can be obtained. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal stages involved in the lab handling of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning constitutes the preliminary processing of a specimen into a lab’s system. It involves confirming that the specimen was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents an initial quick evaluation for abusive drug presence. While Screening is a budget-friendly method to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be valid in legal proceedings. Any samples denoting presumptive positivity in Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample is gauged presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positivity undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the whole laboratory procedure is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can recognize drug usage for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which encompass a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to falsify: It is exceedingly challenging to cheat a hair drug test, rendering the results more precise.
  • Offers insight on past usage: It can depict a pattern of drug consumption over time, instead of merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and personal discrepancies in hair growth can influence the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination actually analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

The advantages of hair follicle testing over traditional urine tests in Cumberland, VA, are substantial. With superior detection accuracy and reliability, hair testing reveals a more comprehensive overview of substance use. Unlike urine tests, which can only detect recent drug use, hair tests provide a longer look-back period, showcasing past usage behaviors, offering a fuller detection picture.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing provides an extended detection window of up to 90 days in Cumberland, VA, significantly surpassing the capabilities of urine tests. This long timeframe allows employers to thoroughly evaluate an applicant or employee's substance use history, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of their past behaviors and aligning with workplace policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
