In Winnsboro, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug analysis. If you require a test for hair-borne substances, we are the experts with nationwide and local testing facilities capable of conducting hair evaluations. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or elsewhere on the body is required. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specific testing options.

Recently, the practice of administering drug tests has increasingly utilized hair follicle analysis. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often prefer it over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle testing is favored by such entities due to its superior detection period, extending up to 90 days, its observed collection method, and the difficulty to tamper with it. Despite this, urine tests remain the most accurate for detecting recent drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now viewed as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of substance intake by embedding biomarkers within its strands during growth. When hair is taken near the scalp, it can offer a detection period extending up to around three months for substances. Hair is easy to collect, fairly resistant to tampering, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's diameter) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for testing. For EtG, supplementary tests, or screenings above 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It is suggested to weigh the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable amount of body hair is acceptable. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair. "Body hair" indicates all other hair types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step of integrating a sample into the lab's system. This involves confirming the sample's proper sealing and transportation, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any lacking data entry not supported by an electronic custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for drug presence. Although Screening is a cost-efficient strategy for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result in Screening must undergo Confirmation to be valid legally. Presumptive positives in Screening must proceed to a subsequent confirmation stage.

When a sample tests positive during Screening, additional hair from the original batch undergoes preparation for Extraction. During this step, drugs are isolated from hair at far lower concentrations than seen in alternative methods (e.g., urine or saliva), which positions hair testing as the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation for any positive result from screening utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technologies. Prior to confirmation as necessary, all presumptive positive samples receive a wash. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire lab process adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests are capable of identifying drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests offering a shorter window.
  • Difficult to evade: Altering results of a hair drug test is highly challenging, leading to more precise outcomes.
  • Provides usage patterns: Offers insights into usage trends over time, instead of just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent exposure: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing approaches.
  • Result variances: Drug metabolite levels in hair can fluctuate due to hair color and personal growth differences.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis involves the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the skin

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Winnsboro, TX, choosing hair follicle testing over urine tests offers distinct advantages due to its superior detection accuracy. Unlike traditional urine tests, hair analysis provides comprehensive insights into an individual's substance use history. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
