Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Victoria, Texas. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in this area, with centers nationwide that can perform these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or from the body may be used. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized options.

Over the last few years, hair follicle drug tests have become a common method of drug testing. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies and courts frequently use these tests. Key advantages include a longer detection period, often up to 90 days, observed collection, and reduced likelihood of cheating. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can offer a detection period of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of approximately 200 hairs (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the perfect quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is suggested. Measuring the specimen on a jeweler’s scale is advisable. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When we mention head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory's system. This process includes ensuring that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not available through an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient means to eliminate drug use across most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for court admissibility. Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening need a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methods.

Confirmation of any positive screening finding is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests, which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • High resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are challenging to deceive, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical insight: It reveals a timeline of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Attributes like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the actual test analyzes the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When considering drug tests in Victoria, TX, hair follicle testing emerges as a superior alternative to urine tests. Detection reliability is significantly enhanced, offering more trustworthy outcomes. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
