Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Tomball, Texas. If a hair or alcohol test is required, our specialists are adept in hair analytics, with testing sites across every city in the nation capable of conducting these tests. Typically, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is necessary. These tests can be used to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specified analysis options.
In recent times, hair follicle analyses have become a more prevalent method of drug testing. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and addiction experts favor a hair analysis over the standard urine test. Such tests are utilized by organizations with strict anti-drug policies, the legal system, and those on probation. Their chief advantage is that they can detect drug usage over as long as 90 days, are collected under supervision, and are notoriously difficult to manipulate. For recent drug use, the first 5 days, a urine test remains the definitive choice.

When you're searching for hair drug testing near me or hair drug testing locations, we provide a simple and convenient process to find a drug and alcohol testing location near you that is certified to provide all of your drug and alcohol testing needs.
Hair tests have emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a long-term record of alcohol and drug intake by capturing biomarkers in the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When collected near the scalp, hair samples can provide up to a three-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient to ship.
A 1.5-inch sample comprising around 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal sample size for analysis and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's recommended to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not an option, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair refers to any other hair types (like facial or axillary hair).
Process Overview
The four primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.
Accessioning encompasses the preliminary processing of a specimen into a laboratory’s system. This involves confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry that an electronic chain of custody system has not provided.
Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective method to rule out drug use on the majority of samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be legally admissible. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.
If a specimen is presumptively positive at the Screening phase, further hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging to execute.
Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

The joint meeting of the Society of Hair Testing (SoHT) and the Italian Group of Forensic Toxicologists (GTFI) was organized in Verona, June 8–10, 2022, and hosted by the Legal Medicine team of the Verona University Hospital, directed by Franco Tagliaro together with Federica Bortolotti and Rossella Gottardo.
It served as a prominent platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration, facilitating groundbreaking advancements in hair testing and analysis. In this special issue of Drug Testing and Analysis, we aim to showcase the remarkable manuscripts presented at this significant event, shedding light on the latest research and highlighting the future directions in this field.
Novel Analytical Techniques: The Verona meeting witnessed the unveiling of cutting-edge analytical techniques, offering enhanced sensitivity, selectivity, and accuracy for drug testing. Remarkable advancements in sample preparation, detection, and identification of drug compounds have been presented. The manuscripts in this section presented novel approaches, such as multianalyte methods and on-line preparation which can enable rapid analysis and improve thorough forensic investigations.
Biomarkers and Pharmacokinetics: The identification and validation of reliable biomarkers and pharmacokinetic studies are fundamental aspects of drug testing and analysis. The impact of hair treatments on the oxidation/decomposition of drugs in hair was also explored, as the long-term fate of drugs incorporated in the keratin matrix. Furthermore, the SoHT meeting in Verona featured research on the identification and quantification of alcohol abuse biomarkers, their stability, and their correlation with exposure and other biomarkers.
Forensic Applications and Interpretation: One of the vital objectives of hair testing is its application in forensic investigations and legal proceedings. The SoHT meeting in Verona emphasized the significance of rigorous interpretation of analytical results and the need for standardized protocols. Manuscripts in this section present advancements in forensic toxicology, and have explored the challenges posed by emerging designer drugs and strategies to combat their proliferation. The pitfalls encountered when the exogenous/endogenous nature of a substance is questioned were presented and discussed. The special issue presents also manuscripts that delve into the ethical implications of drug testing in drug facilitated sexual assaults.
Clinical Applications of hair testing are witnessed by the insight on environmental tobacco smoke exposure, assessed by hair analysis in a population of students and the study of in utero-exposure to drugs of abuse through neonatal hair analysis. Exposure to drugs was also important in cases of child abuse/neglect, when the clinical purpose of hair testing merge with its forensic applications.
The legal framework surrounding hair testing and the achievement of guidelines to ensure fairness, accuracy, and confidentiality in drug testing practices have also been discussed, and the SoHT consensus on general hair testing and testing for drugs of abuse was presented at the meeting and published as a Letter to the Editor.
