Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Sonora, Texas. Expert in hair testing, our centers across the country, including Sonora, can conduct hair drug or alcohol tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed for testing. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specific substances.

Recent trends show an increase in the use of hair follicle drug tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often choose hair tests over urine tests. Companies with zero-tolerance for drugs, legal systems, and probation officers rely on these tests. Hair tests provide a longer detection window, up to 90 days, through a supervised collection process that’s hard to deceive. However, urine tests remain more accurate for recent drug use, typically within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a potent means for detecting substance use. The strands encapsulate a long-term history of alcohol and drug intake by storing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it develops. When taken near the scalp, a hair sample can reveal drug and alcohol use for up to roughly three months. It's straightforward to obtain, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches of approximately 200 hairs (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, which is perfect for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample's weight. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar amount of body hair may be harvested. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary phases in processing a lab drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step of incorporating a sample into the lab’s database. This step involves confirming the sample’s proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial swift evaluation of substance misuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly method to exclude drug use in most samples, a court-admissible positive screen needs confirmation. Samples that appear positive in Screening necessitate an additional confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this procedure, drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly lower concentrations than most other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug testing the most challenging method to execute.

Any positively screened samples undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples deemed presumptively positive are cleansed prior to confirmation as required. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated according to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can detect substance usage for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection timeframe.
  • Cheating is challenging: Hair drug tests are notably hard to manipulate, increasing the accuracy of the results.
  • Offers historical insights: It reveals a pattern of drug consumption over time instead of merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Not apt for recent use: Detection in hair takes around 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually pricier than other testing techniques.
  • Inconsistent results: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing outperforms traditional urine tests in Sonora, TX, due to its superior detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, hair analysis can identify substance use over a longer period, offering a broad view of an individual’s drug history.

While urine tests may capture recent use, hair testing gives a clear, comprehensive picture, making it a preferred method for thorough substance use assessment across various sectors, enhancing safety and compliance.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Sonora, TX provides an extended detection window, capturing substance use history up to 90 days prior. This expansive timeframe offers employers a thorough understanding of an applicant or employee's drug usage habits.

Compared to other testing methods, this longer window gives a complete snapshot of consistent behaviors over time. Employers can make informed decisions based on comprehensive data, enhancing workplace safety and integrity.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Sonora, the reliability of hair follicle tests lies in their tamper-resistant nature. These tests significantly reduce the chance of sample manipulation, ensuring the authenticity of results and maintaining trust in substance use assessments.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
