Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Rosenberg, Texas. If you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing, and boasts testing centers across cities nationwide capable of performing these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is used. Hair tests can analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored hair testing options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are increasingly opting for hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Hair tests are favored by employers with strict drug-free policies, courts, and those on probation. The key advantage of hair tests is the extended detection period of up to 90 days, collected through an observed process, making it nearly impossible to tamper. However, for detecting drug use in the last 5 days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged chronicle of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the strands. When taken from near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe for alcohol and other substances extending up to roughly three months. The collection process is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipment.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) closest to the scalp amounts to approximately 100mg, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG add-ons and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is recommended. It's advisable to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. "Head hair" specifically means scalp hair, while "body hair" covers all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the sample’s initial processing within a lab’s system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any manual data entry that the electronic chain of custody did not cover.

Screening involves a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical way to eliminate drug use in the bulk of samples, a positive result needs secondary confirmation to be legally defensible. Any samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

If a sample indicates a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair from the initial specimen is prepared for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis a challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive results from Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples which are presumptive positive undergo washing before confirmation if required. The whole laboratory procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the accreditation under ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug tests can detect substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Resistance to tampering: It's exceedingly hard to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical usage insights: It can provide a trend of drug use over time, as opposed to just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become evident in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are costlier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Aspects such as hair pigmentation and individual differences in hair growth can affect drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Even though they are frequently called "hair follicle tests," the test itself examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing stands out as a superior method when compared to traditional urine tests in Rosenberg, TX. By offering a longer detection window and more accurate results, hair testing ensures a reliable measure of substance use history. Unlike urine tests, hair testing minimizes the chance of sample tampering, making it a reliable solution for discerning employers.

Extended Detection Window

One of the most remarkable features of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window. In Rosenberg, TX, this method can identify drug usage across an impressive 90-day period. For employers, this offers a thorough overview of an applicant's or employee's drug use history, aiding in making more informed hiring or retention decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
