Based in Port Neches, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair and alcohol analysis, we have facilities across all U.S. cities to administer these tests. Typically, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required, with body hair as an alternative. We provide tests for drug and alcohol/ETG, along with customized testing options.

Recently, hair follicle testing has gained traction in drug screening. It's increasingly required by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies and probation scenarios favor this method for its extended detection, which can last up to 90 days with an observed collection, making it difficult to falsify. Nonetheless, urine tests remain crucial for detection within a five-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as a formidable method in identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive history of these substances by encasing biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can present an approximate detection period of three months for both alcohol and drugs. The collection process for hair is straightforward, posing challenges for tampering, and facilitates easy transportation.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches comprising roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for examination and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest utilizing a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample. Should scalp hair be absent, a similar mass of body hair could be used. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other forms (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure in the lab for processing a drug test result consists fundamentally of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage of entering a sample into the lab's database. This process comprises verifying the correct sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any additional data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody setup.

Screening serves as a preliminary check for substance abuse. Although Screening is economical for excluding drug use for the majority of samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation to be considered valid in legal proceedings. Samples yielding a presumptive positive in Screening thus demand subsequent confirmation.

When a sample shows a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair from the primary specimen is collected and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at far lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening proves to be the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive result from screening is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation as required. The comprehensive lab sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and meets ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Expanded detection duration: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use stretching up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with a much shorter detection timeframe.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, thereby rendering the results more reliable.
  • Conveys historical usage: It offers an account of drug consumption over a timeframe, rather than solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair shade and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations within the hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing with traditional urine testing in Port Neches, TX, several advantages become clear. Hair tests boast a superior detection period, capable of identifying drug use up to 90 days prior, unlike the shorter window of urine tests. This makes hair testing a more trustworthy option for comprehensive drug screening, ensuring employers receive clear and reliable results.

Extended Detection Window

In Port Neches, TX, hair follicle testing provides a longer detection window for substance use, observing patterns up to 90 days prior. This extended period allows employers to gain deeper insights into a candidate's or employee's drug history, offering a more reliable evaluation than traditional methods. This quality is invaluable for maintaining a safe and drug-free workplace.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Port Neches, TX businesses trust hair follicle tests for their tamper-resistant nature, which significantly reduces the chance of sample manipulation. The structure of hair absorbs substances over time, making it nearly impossible to falsify results, thereby delivering unquestionable and dependable findings for all involved parties.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
