Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Pasadena, Texas. If you're seeking a hair or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this type of testing with facilities in every major U.S. city equipped to administer it. For most cases, a sample length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the scalp or another body area is needed. Hair evaluations are effective for detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing requirements.

The past years have seen an increase in utilizing hair follicle drug assessments over traditional methods. Many companies, judicial systems, and substance specialists now prefer hair analysis to urine sampling. Hair follicle evaluations are favored by organizations with zero-tolerance policies, legal bodies, and those on probation. Their chief advantage is the extended timeframe for identifying drug use, often up to 90 days, performed under supervision, and difficult to manipulate. However, for testing substance intake within recent days, urine still proves most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means to identify drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug intake by encapsulating biomarkers in the strands of hair as it grows. When retrieved closely from the scalp, hair can offer a detection span of up to around 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is effortless, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair specimen of around 200 strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, an optimal quantity for screening and corroboration. For EtG extensions, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, a specimen amount of 150mg is advised. We suggest weighing the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, a similar volume of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean specifically scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result includes four pivotal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the primary processing of a specimen into a lab’s system. This involves ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and transported, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any necessary data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary rapid assessment for substance abuse. Screening serves as an economical approach to dismiss drug usage in most samples, though a positive screen must undergo confirmation for court usability. Samples preliminarily deemed positive in Screening require further confirmation.

For samples preliminarily positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at far lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive initial result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples deemed presumptively positive receive a wash before confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug assessments can detect drug usage for up to 90 days, compared to urine assessments which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Hair drug testing is notoriously difficult to subvert, leading to more reliable results.
  • Provides historical data: It can present a record of drug use over extended periods, beyond recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It generally takes 5-7 days for substances to be identifiable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests typically involve higher costs than other drug testing approaches.
  • Variations in results: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can impact the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the assessment targets the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

The advantages of hair follicle over urine tests in Pasadena, TX are numerous. Hair testing outshines in terms of accuracy and reliability by identifying drug use over extended periods. Unlike urine tests, which have shorter detection windows, hair tests provide a more comprehensive view, crucial for employers maintaining drug-free workplaces.

Urine tests can be limited in scope, often missing drug use that occurred beyond a few days. Conversely, hair tests cover nearly three months, offering a broader substance history which is invaluable for courts and employers. This makes hair testing a superior option.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Pasadena, TX offers a remarkable detection window reaching up to 90 days. This extended coverage allows employers to assess substance history over a longer timeframe, unlike other testing methods that might only account for recent usage.

The wide detection range of hair testing provides a full picture of an individual's drug use, assisting employers in making informed hiring and monitoring decisions. This thorough evaluation is crucial for understanding a candidate or employee's drug use history.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Pasadena, TX, hair follicle testing is renowned for its tamper-resistant nature, drastically reducing the risk of adulteration. With stringent sample collection, the possibility of manipulation is minimized, ensuring trustworthy and accurate outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
