Process Overview
The process of laboratory handling for a drug test result involves four core steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Samples flagged as positive during Screening require additional confirmatory testing.
If a Screening stage flags a sample as positive, additional hair is sourced from the original sample for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are derived from hair at significantly reduced levels compared to other techniques (i.e., urine or oral fluid), which contributes to the complexity of hair drug screening.
Verification of any Screening positives is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples presumed positive undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The lab workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and in line with ISO / IEC 17025 certification.

The legal framework surrounding hair testing and the achievement of guidelines to ensure fairness, accuracy, and confidentiality in drug testing practices have also been discussed,and the SoHT consensus on general hair testing and testing for drugs of abuse was presented at the meeting and published as a Letter to the Editor.
