Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle screening services in Nocona, Texas. For those requiring tests for drugs or alcohol, our centers across all cities nationwide are equipped for hair analysis. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Hair testing can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing parameters.

Drug screening methods have evolved, increasingly favoring hair follicle tests in recent years. These tests are now preferred by employers, courts, and substance abuse counselors over traditional urine tests. They are indispensable for employers with strict no-drug policies, legal authorities, and individuals on probation. The key advantage lies in a longer detection period of up to 90 days and an observed collection process, making tampering nearly impossible. However, urine tests remain superior for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the shaft of the hair as it grows. When hair is taken near the scalp, it can offer an approximate 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 strands of hair (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is a perfect quantity for both initial testing and verification. For EtG, additional testing, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable volume of body hair is acceptable. Regarding head hair, we are referencing only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in the lab handling of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab’s framework. This entails verifying that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective means to exclude drug use on most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal acceptability. Any samples that are tentatively positive in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drug extracts from hair at lower concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is considered the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleaned prior to confirmation when needed. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and ISO / IEC 17025 standards of accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, contributing to more accurate results.
  • Offers historical data: It can showcase a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually more costly than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug residues in the hair.

Note: Although commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the evaluation is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle tests with urine tests in Nocona, TX, the advantages are stark. Hair testing boasts greater accuracy and reliability over more conventional urine testing methods. Hair samples can reveal long-term substance use patterns, providing a more comprehensive picture, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection window. The clear choice for comprehensive substance screening lies with hair testing.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing, reaching up to 90 days, greatly benefits employers in Nocona, TX. This prolonged detection period offers a detailed overview of an individual's substance usage history. As opposed to other test methods that might capture recent use only, hair follicle tests provide a thorough assessment, aiding employers in making informed decisions regarding potential hires or current employees.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests stand out in Nocona, TX, for their resistant nature against tampering. The method's design minimizes the risk of manipulation by those being tested. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
