In Navasota, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. For those requiring drug or alcohol testing, we excel in hair testing with centers available nationwide. Typically requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body, these tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide other tailored testing solutions.

Over the years, the hair follicle test has increasingly become a preferred drug testing method. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals now choose it over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation services rely on hair tests. The key advantage of hair follicle testing is its extensive detection window, generally up to 90 days, coupled with observed collection procedures making it nearly uncheatable. Despite this, urine tests remain accurate for recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Seen as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption, hair testing offers a lasting overview of substance use by trapping biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. If hair is collected near the scalp, it can demonstrate a detection period of approximately 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 hair strands (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) from the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the perfect amount for screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the hair on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair refers to other types of hair (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the step where a sample is initially logged into the laboratory's system. This step includes ensuring the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a primary evaluation for drugs of misuse. Although it is an affordable way to rule out drug use on most samples, a positive screening result must be validated for legal acceptance. All samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening require further Confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is collected from the original sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), adding to the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any presumptive positive result employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed as necessary before Confirmation. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, compared to the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very tough, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Provides usage history: Offers patterns of drug use over time, not merely current consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent use: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become apparent in hair.
  • Expense: Generally costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual growth variations can affect drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", this test scrutinizes the hair strand, not the hair follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing
Hair follicle testing in Navasota, TX offers numerous advantages over traditional urine tests. While urine tests may only detect recent usage, hair testing provides a comprehensive assessment of substance use over an extended period. Its superior accuracy and reliability make it an invaluable tool for evaluations requiring thorough and precise detection methods.

Unlike urine tests, which are limited by a shorter detection window and higher chances of sample tampering, hair follicle tests ensure a much more dependable assessment. This testing method is known for revealing patterns of drug use that may have occurred over months, offering a robust choice for reliable screening in Navasota, TX.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
