In Munday, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive services for hair follicle drug testing. If you require a hair-based drug or alcohol test, our firm excels in this testing method. We have centers located nationwide, enabling hair test services in every city. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body can be used. Our hair analyses test for various substances, including drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific options.

Over recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for conducting drug tests. Employers, the judiciary, and substance abuse specialists are now often requiring this type of test instead of the traditional urine method. Hair follicle testing is preferred by employers with zero-tolerance policies, as well as legal and probationary bodies. It offers a longer detection window, up to 90 days, with a supervised collection process that's nearly impossible to manipulate. However, urine tests remain the most reliable for detecting very recent drug use, within about five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely recognized as a potent means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The history of alcohol and other drugs is well-preserved in hair, which captures biomarkers within the strands as they grow. Hair taken near the scalp can present up to a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and other drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, fairly resistant to tampering, and easily transportable.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, the perfect amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. By head hair, we mean exclusively scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other categories of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key procedures in the laboratory analysis of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the first handling of a sample for integration into a laboratory system. This requires checking whether the sample was properly sealed and delivered, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and adding any data not present in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a fast preliminary test for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug use in many samples, a confirmed screen is required for court acceptance. Samples that appear positive during Screening need a further confirmation test.

In cases where the Screening stage indicates a potential positive, more hair is extracted from the specimen and processed for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from the hair at a notably lower concentration than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug screening is among the most intricate methodologies.

The affirmation of any positive screening outcome occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Samples that are provisionally positive are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The overarching lab sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited per CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 norms.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a narrower detection window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It is exceedingly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Provides historical data: It yields a profile of drug use over time, not limited to recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs only become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors such as hair color and individual growth rates can influence the drug metabolite levels within the hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
