Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Marfa, Texas. Specializing in hair testing, our nationwide facilities offer drug and alcohol analysis through hair samples. Typically, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body. Our flexible testing can evaluate substances, alcohol/ETG, or other custom options.

Recently, drug testing often involves hair follicle tests. Courts, employers, and substance abuse professionals prefer them over urine tests. These tests are popular with those upholding zero-tolerance policies. The primary advantage is their 90-day detection window and supervised collection process. Despite this, urine tests remain more precise for detecting recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as a key method for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair shaft as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, moderately challenging to tamper with, and hassle-free to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) from the scalp provides 100mg of hair, ideal for thorough screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen quantity of 150mg is advised. It is recommended to measure the specimen's weight using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent volume of body hair can be substituted. References to head hair strictly denote scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all alternative types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result processing in the laboratory encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial integration of a sample into the lab's system. This step involves checking the sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of misuse. While this method is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug use in most specimens, a positive screening outcome requires confirmation to be legally valid. Any specimens with presumptive positive results during Screening require secondary confirmation.

For samples with presumptive positive outcomes at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample set for the Extraction phase. In Extraction, drugs are removed from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug screening versus other methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive results from Screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptively positive samples are cleaned as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under the regulatory framework of the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can determine drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a more limited detection period.
  • High resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing accuracy in results.
  • Chronological data: The tests can illustrate a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Typically, it takes 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair tests.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug testing incurs higher costs compared to other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth traits can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the testing process focuses on analyzing the hair shaft rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
